But the thing that decides whether your dog can actually pant is a third number the chart never asks for — how tall the basket is, top to bottom, with room for the jaw to drop. Measure three things, not two.
Length. Circumference. Height.
Measure before you buy. Two minutes with a soft tape, mouth closed, dog standing. The breed names in the chart are estimates — dogs of the same breed land in different sizes. Your three numbers decide it.

If your dog's numbers sit near the line between two sizes, both are his size. They just do different work.
The chart is built so either size lets him pant. What changes is how close the basket sits to his mouth — and that decides what each one is for.

Why we built this
Three measurements isn't a new idea. Until now it only came at the top of the market, where the straps cost extra and a wrong size means paying to post it back across an ocean. Rubbing is what a wrong size does — too small and the basket rides on the bridge of the nose. Three things work against it here: the three measurements, a basket that bends with his head instead of grinding against it, and straps that are cotton-padded where they sit on the fur. If it still rubs, that's a fit failure — see the swap. Confirm: add one sentence about the nose-contact material only if the sample shows a softer strip there
"My dog is able to fling his off when he freaks out enough and whips his head hard enough" is one of the most common failures we read — and on the default, reviewers blame the design: nothing anchoring the back of the head, so a paw pulls it forward and off. This one comes with the over-head strap in the box, running between the eyes to the neck strap. Fit still matters most: a too-big basket comes off however it's strapped. That's what the third measurement is for.
That's the thread title half this market has typed. A basket leaves the jaw free, and every size is built with pant room above your dog's closed-mouth snout height — that's the third measurement. We won't tell you panting is guaranteed for every dog; fit decides it, and watching him pant on day one tells you. If it fails, see the swap.
The basket is a flexible silicone-plastic blend. It bends with his head — which is why it doesn't poke or dig in — and it's bite-resistant. It is not bite-proof. A flexible basket is exactly the kind a determined dog can bend, so for a dog with a serious bite history, work with a behaviourist and ask about a wire muzzle. That's Cornell's veterinary college's advice for bite-history dogs too: a positive-reinforcement trainer or a board-certified veterinary behaviourist Cornell's guidance . As one owner put it: "It is a tool for safety, not the solution."
Fair question — "There are many knockoffs that are dangerous and not biteproof" is a real warning from this market. What you can check: the material, the strap set and the sizes are stated on this page; the swap policy is written into your order confirmation; and the trainer video in the section above shows the muzzle handled on a real dog. Measure first — breed is only an estimate, and dogs of the same breed land in different sizes. Five sizes cover snouts from 7.5 to 14.5 inches around, roughly Miniature Dachshund to Rottweiler or Labrador. Not for flat-faced breeds — Frenchies, Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers. Basket muzzles don't fit them safely.

Check your local rules — Ontario, for example, has specific requirements for certain dogs — and measure them against that.

Destruction while you're out is a training and management problem, and a muzzle on an unsupervised dog is a safety risk, not a solution.
